InSTITUTe of Philosophy
The Institute and its aims. The Institute of Philosophy aims to promote cutting edge research in philosophy, run innovative teaching programmes, and foster the public understanding of philosophy.
History of the Institute. The Institute of Philosophy was created in 2003, when it also started offering a Bachelor programme in Philosophy. Since 2022, it hosts a Research Master programme in Philosophy. In 2022, it started a PhD programme in Philosophy. It currently hosts 6 active research projects, 15 collaborators, and 40 guest professors in its BA and MA.
Teaching. The Institute offers the full disciplinary curriculum, running a Bachelor, a Research Master as well as a PhD in Philosphy. Its Bachelor programme, taught mainly in Italian, offers a complete training in the discipline in all of its areas and traditions. On top of its track in Philosophy, it also offers four interdisciplinary tracks in Philosophy and economy, literature, theology, and communication, which allow students to pursue master studies in any of the involved disciplines. Its Master programme, the MAP, is a Research Master taught completely in English, which is focussed on four core areas, i.e. metaphysics, philosophy of physics, logic and philosophy of mind, and aims to prepare students for the best international PhD programmes. The PhD in Philosophy, which aims to prepare students for a future academic career, is also focussed on the same four core areas. The Institute also organizes a yearly summer school, devoted each year to one of the aforementioned four core ares.
Research. Research in the Institute is mainly, though not exclusively, focussed on the four core areas on which the Master and PhD programme are also focussed. As of 2023, the Institute hosts 6 active research projects, four of which are funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and two by private foundations, in which a total of 5 postdoctoral researchers and 4 senior researchers are involved. Such projects include a SNSF Ambizione project, two individual SNSF projects as well as a SNSF Swiss Postdoctoral Fellowship. The Institute fosters research also through the organization of regular research meetings, from small workshops to large conferences.
Public outreach. The Institute fosters the public understanding of Philosophy mainly through the organization of public lectures, public events, and courses open to the general public. During the last few years, such events have been devoted to topics such as the philosophy of time, artificial intelligence, emotions, the nature of the self, literature, free will, quantum mechanics and relativity theory.
